Welcome to the freedom formula for physicians podcast with all about slashing your debt and taxes and creating a liberated lifestyle. And now, your host, with the love of fantasy books and funk and the hatred of running more than three miles; Dave Denniston.
Hey this is Dave Denniston and welcome back to the latest episode of the Freedom Formula for Physicians Podcast. Well in medicine we talk a lot about prevention. And have you ever felt like you were preaching at the choir and maybe in the process you let your own health slip. And then maybe you need some help and some kids were taking care of your own health. And I know there some doctors they are happy, they are healthy and then they are ?? and then they are just struggling. Were struggling with burnout, were struggling with the grind of practicing medicine. And some times I know we tell patients to do as we say but not as we do.
And I had the pleasure of meeting our next guest at a conference a couple of months ago and it turns out I was shocked she knew my wife and we got to chat in more and I was personally surprised to find out she is speaking to physicians across the country on health and wellness. As a matter of fact she is the nationally recognized name in the fitness industry. She has her own TV show which ?? nationally every single week on NRB network.
Her visibly ?? TV show also airs on several other networks and local markets across the country. And in addition she`s been featured as the contributor for diet.com, best ever, U magazine, better self and then many others. Now in addition to all of that she has authored several books including every woman`s guide to personal power. Please help me welcome Wendy Pett.
Dave: well welcome Wendy.
Wendy: thank you. Thank you so much for having me.
Dave: well am so glad you`re here. Let`s kick this off; tell us a bit about you. I mentioned in the intro, you’ve been working with physicians, you have your own TV show, you have enormous writings. So tell us about how you’ve gotten to where you are now. Tell us about your journey.
Wendy: well the journey really all started by ?? ?? accident but we, you and I both know and those listening knows it, most accidents are really not accidents. They are there to propel you to where you are supposed to be in life. And when I say accident I was in automobile accident over fifteen years ago and the long story short I was going about 55 miles an hour and I got off the trail I was on and as I tried to get back on the trail I hit a snow covered covert which sent me flying to the ?? and I hit a tree and I was unconscious. So it was a major accident that propelled me to where I am now.
I was unconscious, I broke my ??, ?? throw back the shoulder muscle and again not so sure the orthopedic surgeon wanted me to have surgery on my shoulder to, to fix the issue with the muscle that were torn and damaged and really I am stubborn. I knew there was a better way to do it naturally and to do it on my own because our bodies are self healing if you give it the right time and tools and that kind of thing.
So I actually after doing the exercises that I teach today and I healed my body naturally and the PD surgeon was shocked. Now am not saying that there is not a time and place for an orthopedic surgeon, there is but in my particular instance I was able to heal my body naturally with the exercises before using… but is more like moving isometric sitting well for lot of mind muscle connection type moves.
And we can talk about that a littles bit later but that’s really what propelled me into my journey. I have always been a student of physical culture, I have thought aerobics and dance and all kinds of things throughout the years; kick boxing, you name it. But teaching visibly set really began buy ?? accident and since then really the door has been opened for me to write books and create visibly set DVDs and TV show and really be a tool of myself to help others know that there are other options for healing and also for preventive.
It can build your body stronger without putting stress on your joints and ligaments. So that’s really how it got started and that’s where I am today and I am really on a mission to just help anyone that is interested in having a better lifestyle and really I know we are talking to physicians here. I help to teach and train and help them ?? and employ that but they are actually not having them across the country.
We are doing one day event, these ?? ?? started as a week long and the transformation within this one week is amazing and is physician led, it has actually opened the door to something called plantrition project which is ?? . Where physicians attend a conference it`s about a three-day conference in California which is very well attended about five or six hundred physicians attend and it is rolling by rolling bound. And we started to do one day event that is called the total health day. And it`s really about educating the public and physicians about how nutrition and exercise can really be that preventive key and help to heal what maybe currently the issue with the patient.
Dave: let me interrupt really quick.
Wendy: go ahead.
Dave: let me just think about this for a moment. Physicians, obviously they love educating their patients and your role is partially in educating physicians. And one of my big concerns out there today is with burnout and all the major problems doctors are having today with staying in practice is often their own personal health coming under attack. What do you think in talking to physicians you are, what do you think in terms of personal health for doctors.
Wendy: yeah I am saying just like you said they are burnout I mean they are cut out, they are stressed out, they are exhausted they are not eating healthy, they are not exercising the way that the like to, you know you mentioned earlier during the introduction that you know there are prescribing some things to their patients that they are not doing it themselves.
We really want to get that turned around because more or ?? and ?? so if I am going to a physician that is healthy, looks healthy and well and strong and ?? ?? some ?? of energy and all those things that helps me as a patient to trust my physician even more. And so is kind of that thing of, you know, put yourself first, kind of in an airplane and you put your own oxygen first and then you put on the oxygen of the person sitting next to you.
Is really that kind of emergency here because we need physicians. Physicians they have been trained to diagnose and treat and they have done a lot of schooling, they have a lot of wisdom but you know they are also just people just like us and when they are stressed out to the max and there is not time and margin left in a day then they put their own health last. I mean they are just exhausted at the end of the day.
You know I have my ?? ?? degree and you know in that space of wellness I know that even when am working with my own client is more or less my answer to kind of get to know what is interesting and I have known so and I have talked to my husband about it, how empathy can be used as a strength.
It can also be more of a weakness if you allow your patient or your client to… their heavy burdens and their illnesses to become affecting you. And so I think sometimes that happens in the field of wellness because we do want our patients and our clients to be healed. We want to give them the best service and recommendation that we can and we end up putting ourselves last or taking on everything that they are going through and bring it home with us. And we just can`t allow that and so it`s time to put ourselves first on some level and get healthy and strong so that we can care for those that we are called to care for effectively.
Dave: so I want you to just show a picture for a moment. You are out there speaking, you see a doctor out there and they come to talk to you afterwards and there are kind of this moment where you can hear the struggle in their voice. You can hear them talking about their health. If you can give that doctor that wants some help, receives some personal health you know is this kind of not going the way it should. What they want, actually one piece of advice that you would give that person. Something that they could walk away with and implement at home.
Wendy: well you know really your health is your wealth, right, so if we don’t have our health then we can’t do what we are called to do and so as a physician someone that`s crying out more or less what do I do, how do I change this ?? ?? will kind of thing am on and really start caring for myself. How do I make these small changes and I say it just like that; start making small changes because those small changes add up.
So do the simple thing, do the simple things like carry a water bottle with you everywhere you go and drink water often because so many times we are just dehydrated and you don’t even take the time to drink water. Set your smart phone at the top of every hour and do a quick three to five minutes of a workout. Believe it or not it adds up and it increases your metabolism keeps your mind clear for your patients for the day.
It`s just you know the small little things to make a big difference and so that’s what I will recommend. To start tweaking and making those small adjustments and when it comes to nutrition you know that’s a big piece that’s a big big piece. So how are you fueling your body and when we are fueling our body with live foods then we are more alive.
So those God given foods, you know the best of the fruits, the whole grains, the ?? proteins and the proteins you know it can be found in plant based foods so I think a lot of people result to the meat for the protein. But we are not in that conversation yet we can go there in a second and pass ?? ?? but physicians know that most of these comes from information in the body.
And information is a result of an injury, is the result from the foods that were eaten, the damage that we are doing to our bodies environmentally and those kind of things so how do we eliminate the information so that we don’t even have to deal with the disease. That’s even on a personal level, let’s get the information out of our bodies so that we aren’t tired and exhausted and those kind of things so that we can really take care of our patients effectively.
Dave: that’s great advice and one thing I have been doing lately and you are going to love this. I was getting some personal coaching myself and what my coaches suggested was every morning when you get up, write down or speak aloud or something, your ideal life. So maybe if is something like your health how do you picture yourself? What are you doing and what are eating and envision yourself doing that? So I think incorporating what you are just talking about and something like that could be so powerful for people so I would urge everyone, think about what you want your ideal health to look like and then implement some of these stuff Wendy is going to be talking about.
Wendy: sure. Good.
Dave: let`s talk about the nutrition real quick. So obviously a lot of things we talk about nowadays, organic, you know we hear about almond milk, we hear about some of the things you are talking about. Tell me about maybe a couple of things that people may not know that may surprise them.
Wendy: alright, as I was alluding to growing more of the plant based diets, the plantrition project is really all about a plant based diet and it`s led by one of my dear friends an incredible physician Dr. Scrath Stall and I encourage you to look him up. And also go to the plantritionproject.org to learn more. He and Dr. Gregory, there are several physicians that are involved and they have to fight the chemicals, they have all the minerals and the nutrients that are bodies just crave. And typically we go to let sounds good or let our bodies want you know craving that, whatever, chicken sandwich or hamburger or whatever you are drawn to that’s really not what your body want.
Dave: chocolate cake
Wendy: exactly right so is the sugar fats and salts that we are addicted to as a society and this is what`s causing so much diseases, the sugar fat and salt and especially the sugar. Well, and the fat. If we can get that out of our system and start eating a plant based diet that’s rich with those kind of nutrients and those kind of chemicals is going to help to fight disease in our bodies and grow our bodies at the cellular level that is just a machine, ready to do the work that is called to do. A healthy machine.
And so a lot of people are talking about protein, oh I want to get my protein from meat. Well, you know, let’s say a 100 calories of brackley has more protein than a hundred calories of ?? ??. now that’s shocking for a lot of people. People have not realized that. So they say oh I have to get a lot of meat but you know meat causes the body to become acidic which causes inflammation in the body. So you need alkaline in the body and that’s one of the ways to do it is to ditch the meat. And another way is to ditch the dairy. And people are like, oh my God what about cheese and what about milk. Listen up, you know dairy really makes the body to acidic as well which makes the body inflamed and dairy can be a corporate for a lot of allergies and that kind of thing. Am not saying that physicians listening probably don’t already know but is putting that into practice in their own lives because it does make a difference.
Dave: you know am trying to picture in my mind you know what does this look like? What would I have for breakfast, what would I have for lunch, what would I have for dinner? You know I have been thinking, oh gosh, brokerly, smoothies potato. You know I was just thinking about them like; huuuh, that doesn’t sound so good so give me an example of what does breakfast, lunch and dinner look like using this plant philosophy.
Wendy: you know that’s a great question. Remember what I said a moment ago about simple steps, just making one little small change at a time so you probably wouldn’t do it all at once. You gradually take out something on your plate that isn’t helping before you and then add on you know a salad or add on some cooked grains or whatever. But for me for instance the first thing I eat every morning is I have a bowl of ?? ?? oath with berries and I have a little bit of ?? on there and some ?? seeds and that’s my meal and I am satisfied you know, that that’s exactly what my body wants. And then I have a snack if I am hungry, maybe around 10 or 11 o`clock in the morning and then maybe a small handful of raw ?? or maybe half of a banana or something of that nature.
And then lunch time is definitely… if you start looking at your plate for instance like half of your plate eating is salad, half of the plate is the just the raw beautiful, colorful salad. As may have to ?? ?? that’s great. The dressing is what gets you and you know I use the dressing, I just squeeze the lemon on there and you can put spices on there and your good to go. Your ?? does change and is amazing once you start eating this way how if you do take something that is full of sugar, is full of salt, you are aware of that doesn’t taste good anymore. And your body reacts differently.
We should talk about the holiday meals that’s just happened, maybe the sugary things that I had and because you know I am human I enjoy it a little bit too. I mean the next day I woke up and my eyes were puffy. Your body does respond but the problem is that we`ve ignored those signals for so long that we finally just gives them just fine am not going to tell you anymore and then it becomes the issue where it has to get attention. So we don’t want that we want to be more treat in a preventative manner and so that really works out. Yeah it`s cooked green, it`s beans, its grains like kinwa. And you can get so many things. There are recipes that are endless and you never get bored.
Dave: well you know I have to be real with you. One thing that I think about in addition to some of the menu stuff is when I think about organic, I think about some of those other stuffs being a financial guide that’s cheap right, I think about expensive which I know some people say how much more expensive would it be if you have diabetes and you have medical stuff on them. But realistically on a day to day budget, you know if you are talking to someone, say they are resident, they are a fellow were young physicians just transition to practice, they have a few hundred thousand dollars of medical school debt and it`s like; can I really afford a day to day basis to have this kind of stuff. What would you say to someone like that?
Wendy: I will just say do what you can and figure out what the dirty does in our and a clean 15 and do what you can as far as the organic is concerned there.
Dave: the dirty dozens.
Wendy: the dirty dozen, yeah. So like an apple, strawberry, cucumbers, all of those, spinach ?? really need to be organic. The other once you don’t have to worry as much about so if you can really stick with that dirty dozen left and do organic with those, first and foremost, then you are probably going to be ok. If you can go all organic that’s even better. Grow your own that’s even better but you know let`s get real.
So we just have to start where we are and do the best we can. And be aware of why we do this. And it is because of the pesticides in the produce and there is a problem that’s causing diseases so in the long run as physicians we want to be of help as we can and yes on a budget you can still do it. You I just made ?? ?? the other night. I had a bad of peas which is under 2 dollars and you know that’s almost all week, you know that and salad and something else. So you can stretch it, you just have to be creative, alright. But you can definitely do it.
Dave: alright, that’s fair, that’s fair…
Wendy: and also go through the co-op. a co-op is a great way to cut cost as well.
Dave: You know I was thinking about it. You what probably the biggest part of grocery bill is? Outside of pull often stuff for the kid. You know what I think it is?
Wendy: what?
Dave: I think it is meat. You know is going to cost go get a bag of chicken breast. You know is like 25 bucks. The big old bucks.
Wendy: think of how many beans you can buy for 25 dollars.
Dave: I have no idea. That will be a lot.
Wendy: yeah beans and grains that’s where we want to be
Dave: alright. Now what I want us to think about Wendy, maybe you’ve seen someone that`s just applied this. Outside of yourself I don’t want to be doing this but I want you to think about physicians maybe you’ve seen that have applied this, perhaps the German you were talking about. Have you seen applying this diet, applying this lifestyle changing some peoples` lives? Can you tell us a couple of story?
Wendy: yes. Well first let me start with Doctor Scott Still. And I can`t really narrate his entire story to you but I will be the best I can but see am his practice for many many years and his patients kept coming to him and said you know what am still this, am just still on that pain and as a physician you walk away going, gush, how can I help this person because that’s why we are in this wellness field to begin with. Is to help people get healthy and well. And so it just kept neighing at him. How could he just help this person and people were coming to him with obviously other issues and mentally and spiritually. It wasn’t just the physical but it all played a role. Is just a mind body and spirit, is all connected.
And so when he sat down to talk to a couple of patients, he realized that you know, where are the prescriptions, is it a medical, pharmaceutical prescription. You ?? have a prescription for a diet because if you are saying that that’s where he was led to write up the prescription for a diet. And so he let that out and then next thing you know it was ?? so like smoothies in the morning whatever. Then the patients were coming back like how they didn’t have the aches and the pains. They were feeling better and they were having clarity of thoughts and those kinds of things. So then he really sort of dived into it and all the books he put on and so as a physician they are trained to diagnose and treat.
But certain of our nation helps to conscientize into the treatment of prevention. And so a lifestyle related more than that. And so as a result of the state of the American diet it really affected where our health is today. And so he really did a lot of studying and found out that the more you wrote prescription for a clean eating and a plant based diet your patients were getting healed. They will come back saying you know what I feel great. I don’t have that aches and pain in my knee anymore, I don’t feel the arthritis if I were in my house.
All these things, we are just like wow this is amazing so he did the normal research and saw that this is altering the lives of the patient. And so people are getting their blood pressure met, their cholesterol down, you name it. That’s what’s happening. And so he himself he has six children and they implemented this into their family and have for the last 12 or 13 years all the children eat this way.
They eat completely clean, grow a lot of their own vegetables but they are not getting sick in years so I think that’s part of it too. As a physician you have a sick patients you can’t put yourself out there to contract whatever they are bringing in to your office. So you have to get healthy and well. How do you do that, by feeding your body with the right nutrients to fight it and fight it effectively? So he really has led the charge and there are so many others that are doing this as well but is really been a pant that is all about nutrition and exercise and we have one gentleman that went through the public but after 17 months he is down 215 pounds. He is remarkable. He is on the cover of ?? magazine, people are reaching out left right to hear his story because it`s made such a difference in his life and his health and he was really ?? ?? when he came to see us. So it worked.
Dave: well if you have your own materials one of the things I would love to do is get people great tools, great resources. So regarding strengthening our health, regarding strengthening our body there are some great books or programs that you would recommend to residents, fellows, practicing physicians.
Wendy: well definitely want to recommend the plant session project. So go to their website; plantsessionproject.org. Also go to totalhealthbase.com and check those out. Because I think you will find information on those conferences very useful and beneficial. There is a lot of great things out there that you can apply. I mean even if it is something as simple as listening to your podcast for instance or another podcast that they can do while they are in between the patient that will be uplifting and encouraging and motivating. I mean even like a Tony Robins on some level right. Whoever it is that it kind of get you pumped up and you knows wears the currency and so when you are being fed the right words and keep you in a state of health minded as opposed to like I said when I cannot allow my empathy to step in. and it can really derail you and make you depressed and that’s where took me for a low and I got a grip on it. So you have to stay for me I stay in guards word. There is other things out there… maybe for you like Tom Robins or whatever it is that keep you grounded and keep you in a place of a state of like I said of a healthy individual because our ?? are powerful.
Dave: that’s right, absolutely. And there is so much that we don’t have the time to cover. I would have loved to talk about whether exercise or stuff like that but… do you have any other closing thought that you think doctors out there, our listeners should be aware of?
Wendy: you know I think is just to realize that you are human, I mean we are all just doing our best and to just continue to have that passion and to go full force in what you do because you are needed and you have… you know we need you, we need you to be healthy as a society. Especially where our world is shaping right now with the… just ?? ?? epidemic and the things that are going on.
We need physicians to tell us the truth. And right now some people are able to go online and try to look up their own diagnosis and so I don’t want them to be frustrated as one of those… you know too many other people are telling them what they may have because you are one that went to school, you are the one that has been educated and just know that we need you and we need you to be healthy. So do what you have to do, take the time and the day and put yourself so that you can serve others best and that’s all my message. It`s ok.
Dave: awesome. Well thank you so much for being with us Wendy. If people have more questions how can they get in contact with you?
Wendy: yes, having gone to wendiepett.com and I do have some exercises there that I share my visible programs there. Also you can go to your show note and I will be giving away a bundle of my DVDs that I know the physicians would really enjoy so they could win one of those and they can apply it throughout the day as they are doing the practice so they can become stronger and have more energy.
Dave: oh awesome. Thank you so much and with this offer I think what I would like to do is in order to win the set of DVDs, what I would like folks to do when they go to the show note make a comment, let us know what you think about the podcast and let us know about you and your story. January 23, 2016 at 5:16 pmI am a visual oriented person. When I was at the Univ of Fl in 1948 two of my professors recognized this & told me that as long as I made an A on the tests, I did not have to attend their classes & this allowed me to work at the Registrar’s Office with Miss Ruth Jones, director of Veteran affairs. Probably learned more working than I would have in class, It is difficult for me to listen because of interruptions and a wandering mind. Thanks I will read the transcript when available & hope I am the winner of the BOOK BTW Thanks for the Letter and the Jan issue. I will share with my CPA daughter and as I am on the advisory committee at the RiverOak College, I will share with many there. I am in the process of giving my medical and business books to them Wendie does have an excellent voice as many elderly cannot understand some speech tones. I could understand every word and that does make it easier to stay tuned. +++ Thanks 84 yr ole Florida Pharmacist, Reg No., PS6830.

January 23, 2016 at 7:34 pmBTW One reason I like a DVR or a book is that I can back up and ascertain what I have heard, seen or read. Radio was never something I listened to except for background music. When Listening and you do not understand then the mind wanders & ponders and I miss more of the speech. I perceive you could have used more printed info to view during the talk. Thanks. John Chambliss BTW Over the past 35 years I have followed Live Extension, Dr. Barry Sears & 3 or 4 other nutrition gurus Over the years I have always since I learned that Prozac was only about 60% effective recommended light therapy by going outside first thing each morning and looking not at but toward the sun. It was thought this helped seasonal problems but just this week Harvard news letter states a new study thet it is effective in all kinds of depression. I use Dr. Ott full spectrum bulbs. He was a friend, and lived at Sarasota/Siesta key, Florida. I have 4
or 6 of his tapes with his handwriting on the labels.
